This work was a major breakthrough for me. I found that I could suddenly paint when I gave up trying to work like a painter and started applying the qualities of my drawings to paint: distinct, block shapes, bright, bold colors, cartoony exaggeration of everything, and flat cell shading, rather than trying to blend values and hues.
